Sheryl Lee Ralph may have a check by her name from Whoopi Goldberg’s wish list for the long-awaited third installment of the Sister Act franchise.
On Wednesday, Feb. 7, the “Abbott Elementary” star stopped by “The View” where Goldberg invited her to a Sister Act 2 cast reunion celebration planned for the daytime talk show before eventually making a pitch for her to appear in the still-developing third film.
“Something that’s gonna happen here in order to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Sister Act 2. The producers here at ‘The View’ are working on putting together a reunion,” Goldberg said to Ralph after watching a scene from SA2. “And we’re gonna try to get as many cast members on to share memories from the movie. Would you do us the honor of coming back? And as soon as we know when it is, we’ll do that.”
Ralph, who played the character of Florence Watson in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, replied cheerfully to Goldberg’s reunion inquiry, saying she “would love to” before the EGOT-winning host went for the big ask.
“I will also do this,” Goldberg added. “We’re in the process of putting together [the third movie]. Will you come be part of it? Whatever it is?” before Ralph appeared sweetly emotional and agreed to Goldberg’s request.
For years, Goldberg had been campaigning for a third movie, citing the box office success of the first two films. In 2020, Walt Disney Studios announced they had begun developing a third film with Tyler Perry attached as a producer.
Since that time, Goldberg has been doing her part to make it happen by recruiting actors to appear in the film, including Maggie Smith, who played the pretentious Reverend Mother, and has been vocal that she’d also love to see stars such as Keke Palmer, Lizzo, and Nicki Minaj appear in the new movie as well.
