Lake Lanier is set to open a water park this summer. On March 13, Margaritaville at Lake Lanier Islands announced intentions to open Georgia’s first “waterslide coaster” at the Fins Up Water Park, according to WSB.“This monumental investment marks the most significant expansion of Margaritaville at Lanier Islands in decades, adding Georgia’s largest waterslide complex to the water park, boasting an impressive 15 slides in total in 2024,” park officials reportedly wrote.
The ride will reportedly have the largest water slide drop in America with speeds at an average of 30 miles per hour. Three more slides will also be included in the park, intended for younger attendees.
The park is set to open on May 4.
Social media users addressed the elephant in the room.
“DO NOT GO TO LAKE LANIER,” Corvo Apollo posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “PLEASE TAKE IT FROM THE SOUTHERNER, PLEASE THAT LAKE IS HAUNTED.”

The lake was created in the 1950s by flooding communities that contained a cemetery. More than 200 people have died at the lake in swimming and boating accidents since 1994.
In 2023, independent filmmakers William Bush-Anderson and Cindy Kunz-Anderson, with the help of former WNBA star Angel McCoughtry, released Lanier, a movie based on the legend of the lake. FX’s “Atlanta,” created by Donald Glover, also referenced the lake’s history.
