The rematch is finally here.

Nearly a year after a game that shifted the public perception of American’s women’s basketball for the modern era, LSU and Iowa are set to face each other in the Elite 8 on April 1. The two teams faced one another in last year’s national championship game in a record-breaking viewership performance between the animated Angel Reese and competitive Caitlin Clark.

Going into last year’s game, Clark built a large following during the tournament with her flashy play and deep three-point attempts. Reese gained popularity during the regular season with dominant stats in SEC play, blocking a shot with one shoe on. As much as Reese and Clark were loved, they were also hated for their on-court antics, taunting and trash talk. In the closing moments of the 2023 national championship game, Reese did the “you can’t see me” gesture to Clark, something Clark previously did in the Elite 8 to Hailey Van Lith and Louisville.

Reese was heavily ridiculed for making the gesture at Clark and called “classless” for the act. Clark did not receive near as much criticism for doing the same thing earlier in the tournament. Despite losing by double digits, first lady Jill Biden suggested that Iowa get invited to the White House as well. Of course, after Reese said she wouldn’t co-sign the decision because no losing team in history has had that honor, LSU eventually went to the nation’s capital and Reese shared a hug with Mrs. Biden.

For the remainder of the past year, almost everything Reese and Clark have done has been compared to each other. After the Tigers’ win in the Sweet 16 over UCLA, Reese said she hasn’t had peace since last year’s game.

Now, they meet again, and social media has a name for it.
