There’s always things in life that change our direction in life. For Bre $tyle it was a simple question that somebody asked her: “Do you rap?”
Prior to making music, $tyle worked for a radio station, created a nonprofit helping student-athletes, and got into sports writing. Her success led her to explore her musical side, and in June 2023, she released the single “Love Song.”
Since then, $tyle has shown her listeners that she can tap into different musical flows and genres of music, and with her debut album RnBre set to release in May 2024, she’s ready to give the music scene something fresh and new.
Are spoke with rolling out about what inspired her to start making music, her thoughts on today’s music and what to expect on her debut album.
What led you to release your debut song?
I wrote “Blow The Whistle” — and I still didn’t know. I knew this was something, but I didn’t know I was supposed to be a rapper. God will speak to me in random different ways, so the producer Hitmaka had a tweet go viral at the end of 2022. The tweet was basically saying, “I can’t wait until there’s a female rapper that’s not all about sex, scamming and whatnot.” I was, like, “Hold on now.” One of the best producers in our generation is saying, “Hey, there’s a lane and a need for what you could possibly provide.” After that, I was, like, we need to get [in] formation because now’s the time. Clearly, he’s saying now is the time.

How do you feel about today’s music?
I’m not going to lie to you — it’s all bad. Everything that I heard was so unlike me, and I think that’s why I had fallen off of listening to rap. I’m a blog-era baby, so all of those guys I still listen to, but as far as finding new rap, I kind of lost my drive to do that. And then we’re growing up also. But all the rap that I hear when I go outside is not my vibe at all. I would never be on this type of [rap]; this doesn’t come up on my playlist. I’m not putting this on in the car, nothing.
I have Free Game, which is my nonprofit organization where I work with student-athletes. So wherever I’m at, I want everybody to feel comfortable. I want parents to feel comfortable; I want children to feel comfortable, and my peers. I think I’m somebody that everybody can kind of relate to in a way, and I knew that was missing as well. Not only just positivity in the music, but that extreme lover-girl/lover-boy mentality is missing out there. I feel like that was a lane that Drake had mastered for a long time. Now that he’s fallen out of it, we really haven’t seen that anymore — so that’s the type of time that I’m trying to be on.
What should people be expecting from the album?
People should be expecting one of the most incredible debut projects that they’ve ever heard. The bars are there; the melodies are there; and the storytelling is there. I wrote everything on the album; I picked all the beats; and I think it’s something that feels good. I think we’re missing feel-good music, and I kind of made it my mission to make that specifically, so I think people can be inspired by it. If you know me, I would expect you to kind of take a look at yourself after and say, “Hey, what do I really want to be doing,” because I just be out here doing whatever. I hope people know that there should be no limit on what you’re trying to do in your life — you can do whatever you want to do.
