Coco Gauff will make history when she carries the American flag for the U.S. Olympic team during the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics.
Gauff heard the news on July 24. She’ll join LeBron James as the other flag bearer leading the Olympic team. The tennis star will be the youngest flag bearer in U.S. Olympic history.
During the opening ceremony on July 26, the U.S. athletes will appear on a boat and ride down the heart of Paris as they’re introduced, with both Gauff and James carrying the American flag.
I just want to say thank you to my fellow team usa olympians/athletes for voting and choosing me for this incredible honor to be the flag bearer for the opening ceremony ❤️. Thank you so much. I am incredibly honored. 🥹🇺🇸

“I never thought in a million years I would have the honor of carrying the American flag for Team USA in the Opening Ceremony,” Gauff said in a statement released to the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee. “I could not be more proud to lead my teammates with LeBron as we showcase our dedication and passion on the biggest stage there is — at a moment where we can bring athletes and fans together from around the world.”

This will be Gauff’s first time participating in the Olympics. She made the team in Tokyo in 2021 but had to withdraw days before the opening ceremony after testing positive for COVID-19. Since then, Gauff has gone on to accomplish many things in the world of tennis, including winning the U.S. Open in 2023 and currently ranked No.2 in the singles ratings for the Women’s Tennis Association.
