Grammy-winning artist Samara Joy is making waves once again with the upcoming release of her third studio album, Portrait, scheduled for Oct. 11 via Verve Records. This follows her remarkable win for Best New Artist at the 2023 Grammy Awards.
About the album
Co-produced by Joy and renowned multi-Grammy award winner Brian Lynch, Portrait features eight tracks that showcase the incredible talent of her touring band. The ensemble includes: trumpeter Jason Charos, trombonist Donavan Austin, saxophonists David Mason and Kendric McCallister, pianist Connor Rohrer, bassist Felix Moseholm and drummer Evan Sherman.
Musical inspirations
According to a report from Variety, the album will feature Joy’s original lyrics, inspired by jazz legends like Charles Mingus and Sun Ra. Additionally, it will include fresh interpretations of classic standards, such as “You Stepped Out of a Dream” and “Autumn Nocturne.”
Joy expressed her excitement about the project. She emphasized the collaborative nature of the album, which has been shaped through a year of development and performances on the road.
Upcoming tour
In support of her new album, Joy will embark on an international tour spanning 39 dates. The tour kicks off in Washington, D.C., at the D.C. Jazz Festival on Aug. 30 and wraps up in New York City at Carnegie Hall on April 30.
Previous success
Joy’s last album, Linger Awhile, achieved significant success, peaking at No. 158 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and reaching No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Jazz Albums chart.
