On a recent episode of “CBS Mornings,” Gayle King shared a humorous yet slightly alarming story about a food order gone wrong, leaving viewers both entertained and concerned. According to a report by People on Sept. 10, the television host recounted her attempt to enjoy a coconut custard pie that arrived in a less-than-appealing state.

The pie that wasn’t

King began her tale by painting a picture of the delicious coconut custard pie she had ordered, showing her audience what it was supposed to look like. However, when she revealed the actual pie she received, it was clear that something had gone terribly wrong. The bottom half of the pie was completely missing, leading King to question whether it had been eaten or simply jostled during delivery.

Upon contacting the restaurant to express her concerns, King was met with an unexpected response. The restaurant staff suggested that it looked like someone had taken a bite out of her pie, even jokingly implying that her doorman might have been the culprit. King quickly defended her doorman, insisting that he would never do such a thing.

Was it jostled or half-eaten?

As the story unfolded, King engaged her cohosts in a lively discussion about the state of the pie. While most agreed that it appeared to be half-eaten, Emmy-winning host Ross Mathews humorously suggested it looked two-thirds eaten. The banter continued as King revealed that, despite the questionable state of the pie, she had indeed eaten it.

Her admission sparked laughter in the studio, with one cohost exclaiming, “Ew!” When asked if she had scraped off the eaten part, King sheepishly admitted that she hadn’t. She initially believed the pie had simply been jostled until she started asking others for their opinions.

Fan reactions

Fans of the show were quick to react to King’s story, expressing their disbelief and concern for her health. One fan humorously advised her to get a tetanus shot, while another cautioned against eating food that might have been contaminated. Many viewers echoed the sentiment that King should have thrown the pie away, emphasizing the potential health risks involved.

Despite the mishap, King seemed unfazed and even protective of the restaurant, opting to keep its identity anonymous. She mentioned that she had ordered from them again the very next morning, indicating her loyalty to the establishment.

A follow-up with Oprah Winfrey

The following day, King provided an update on her pie saga, this time with her best friend, Oprah Winfrey, joining her on the show. King shared security footage from her apartment building, showing the delivery process. As the footage played, cohost Nate Burleson jokingly remarked that he didn’t see any jostling happening.

King recounted how the delivery driver handed the pie to her doorman, who then took it to the elevator. When King retrieved the pie, she humorously noted that she was thankful she was dressed, as she sometimes answers the door in a towel.

Winfrey chimed in with her thoughts, suggesting that the pie had indeed been jostled — right into someone’s stomach. She humorously questioned the absence of the crust, further adding to the hilarity of the situation.
