As Halloween approaches, excitement fills the air with thoughts of costumes, candy and spooky decorations. However, despite the fun, health experts are urging caution regarding the materials used in Halloween costumes. The Center for Environmental Health has raised alarms about hazardous toxins found in costumes from popular retailers such as Halloween Express, Spirit Halloween, Burlington Coat Factory and Dollar General.

Understanding the risks of toxic materials

Recent investigations have revealed that many costumes contain harmful substances like cadmium, lead and Bisphenol A (BPA). These chemicals pose significant health risks, especially to children who are more vulnerable to toxic exposure.

What is BPA and why is it dangerous?

BPA, or Bisphenol A, is a chemical commonly used in the production of certain plastics and resins. It is often found in everyday items such as water bottles, food containers and the linings of canned goods. Concerns about BPA arise from its ability to leach into food and beverages, leading to potential exposure. Research indicates that BPA can disrupt endocrine function by mimicking hormones like estrogen, which may contribute to various health issues, including: reproductive problems, developmental delays in children, infertility, breast cancer, endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome.

In response to these concerns, many manufacturers are now producing BPA-free products, and several countries have implemented regulations to limit its use, particularly in items designed for infants and young children.

The dangers of lead and cadmium

Lead is another toxic heavy metal that poses serious health risks. In children, exposure to lead can result in cognitive impairments, behavioral problems and developmental delays. For adults, lead exposure may lead to memory loss, decreased attention span and various neurological disorders. Cadmium, a metal found in zinc ores, is also concerning; even small amounts can lead to developmental issues in children and long-term health problems in adults, including: hypertension, gastrointestinal complications and kidney damage.

Mihir Vohra, science lead at the Center for Environmental Health, highlighted in a statement to The Guardian that retailers like Halloween Express and Spirit Halloween have been identified as primary offenders, with high levels of lead, cadmium and BPA exceeding California’s safety standards.

Protecting yourself from toxic exposure

To safeguard yourself and your loved ones from toxic chemical exposure this Halloween, experts recommend avoiding inexpensive costumes from brands like Halloween Express and Spirit Halloween, as well as ultra-cheap fashion retailers such as Shein and Temu. These brands often do not meet minimal standards for sourcing toxic-free materials.

At the federal level, the U.S. government has banned only three chemicals — lead, cadmium and certain phthalates — from clothing, and this regulation applies solely to children’s products. Therefore, it is crucial to check the labels on your clothing for toxins and stay informed about the materials used in your Halloween costumes.

This Halloween, while you enjoy the festivities, remember to prioritize safety by being mindful of the materials in your costumes. By choosing safer options and staying informed, you can ensure a fun and healthy celebration for you and your family.
