Last weekend, the 2024 Cricket Celebration Bowl at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium witnessed a thrilling matchup as Jackson State University triumphed over South Carolina State with a score of 28-7. This event attracted nearly 37,000 fans, specifically 36,823 attendees, marking a significant moment for HBCU football.

Attendance trends: A decline over the years

Despite the excitement surrounding the game, attendance has seen a downward trend for the third consecutive year. In 2023, the bowl attracted 41,108 fans, while the previous year set a record with 49,670 attendees witnessing North Carolina Central University’s overtime victory against Jackson State. Analysts attribute this decline to several factors, including: the size of the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which is significantly larger than the former Georgia Dome; higher ticket prices that may deter potential attendees and changes in logistics that have impacted the overall experience.

If the game had been held at the Georgia Dome, it would have likely surpassed the 2015 attendance of 35,528, showcasing the difference in venue capacity and fan engagement.

The impact of COVID-19 and Coach Prime

The Celebration Bowl faced a hiatus in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it made a strong comeback in 2021, drawing nearly 50,000 fans, largely credited to the involvement of Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders as head coach of Jackson State. His influence has played a pivotal role in elevating the visibility of HBCU football.

Television ratings surge

On a positive note, the 2024 Celebration Bowl saw a significant increase in television ratings. According to HBCU Gameday, the game, which aired on ABC, averaged 2.1 million viewers, reflecting a remarkable 37 percent increase from the previous year. John T. Grant, the executive director of the Celebration Bowl, expressed optimism about the event’s future, stating to HBCU Gameday, “This year’s success reaffirms the Celebration Bowl’s role as the premier showcase for HBCU football. The decision to adjust the game’s timing was strategic, and it clearly paid off.”

Strategic timing for success

One of the key strategies that contributed to the Celebration Bowl’s success this year was the decision to move the game one week earlier. This timing adjustment allowed the event to avoid direct competition with the expanded College Football Playoff, ensuring that it retained a primetime spotlight on ABC.

Looking ahead: The future of HBCU football

The Celebration Bowl continues to be a significant event for HBCU athletics, showcasing the talent and spirit of HBCUs. While attendance may have fluctuated, the rising television ratings indicate a growing interest in HBCU football on a national scale. As the event evolves, it remains crucial for organizers to address attendance challenges while capitalizing on the momentum gained through strategic planning and community engagement.

The 2024 Cricket Celebration Bowl not only highlighted Jackson State’s victory but also underscored the importance of adapting to changing circumstances in the world of sports. With continued efforts to elevate HBCU athletics, the future looks promising for both the Celebration Bowl and the broader HBCU community.
