One of the most adored couples in hip-hop is Nelly and Ashanti. Both musicians, whose music dominated the early 2000s, have recently become parents. Apparently, the next step will be reality TV. According to Deadline, Peacock will create a forthcoming docuseries that will center on Nelly and Ashanti. The couple’s first year of marriage will be the subject of the one-season documentary series and it will also highlight the arrival of their first child, Kareem.
Over the past three months, Nelly and Ashanti have intermittently been filming with a team. Both artists, along with Oji Singletary and Jenny Daly, of Critical Content Studios, will produce the docuseries. The title and release date have not yet been announced, and the production is still ongoing. However, everyone familiar with Nelly and Ashanti’s past is aware of the different storylines that might be talked about. The 2003 Grammy Awards marked the couple’s first meeting. Between 2003 and 2013, they dated for 10 years and collaborated on one successful single: “Body on Me” peaked at No. 10 in 2008.
Nelly and Ashanti — from break up to make up
In 2013, Nelly and Ashanti parted ways. Ten years later, they made amends and reunited. On July 18, 2024, they welcomed their first child together, Kareem Haynes. Although she was initially shocked by his reconciliation with Ashanti, Nelly was eventually appreciative. “It surprised both of us though,” the rapper clarified. “It wasn’t at all what was anticipated. We were essentially doing the same thing, I believe, but sometimes being apart helps you understand one other better.” The first time, according to Nelly, their relationship was ruined by their work aspirations and career goals at the time.
“You know, before I felt like both of us are doing what we’re doing career wise,” he told Kirk Frost and Rasheeda in 2023. “And when you got so many people in the middle of it, it can be tough.”
It will be interesting to see how much of their lives Ashanti and Nelly allow the public into. Will they show the ups and downs of their relationship or only show the highlights? Will they show the difficulties of being new parents, especially at older ages, or will it be more fluff? Only time will tell.
