Amazon is using artificial intelligence in a feature on Kindle. This innovation represents a significant shift in how readers interact with digital books, with industry experts predicting AI-enhanced reading will transform the e-reader market in coming years.

The e-commerce company has introduced a new Recaps feature for its e-reader, which allows users to get a rundown of plot points and the transformation of characters throughout the latest story in the book’s series. This technology draws on advanced natural language processing capabilities that can analyze and synthesize complex narrative structures.

“We use technology, including GenAI and Amazon moderators, to create short recaps of books that accurately reflect book content,” Amazon spokesperson Ale Iraheta said in an emailed statement to TechCrunch. The combination of artificial intelligence and human oversight ensures the summaries maintain context and nuance that might otherwise be lost in purely automated systems.

Kindle users in the US can make use of this feature – which warns people before they are taken to Recaps that it will spill spoilers – for books they have bought or are borrowing. Spoiler warnings have become increasingly important in digital content consumption as users seek to preserve the intended experience of narrative media.

The American company – which is owned by Jeff Bezos – aims to roll out Recaps to the Kindle App on Apple’s IOS-operating system devices soon. This expansion will bring the technology to millions of additional potential users who read primarily on mobile devices rather than dedicated e-readers.

To use Recaps – which covers a variety of book genres, including fantasy, thriller and trending titles – users are required to install the latest Kindle software, and by checking if they have a “View Recaps” button on the series page in the Kindle Library. Fantasy and thriller genres are particularly well-suited for recap features due to their often complex plotlines and character relationships.

Alternatively, Kindle owners can see if there is a “View Recaps” button within the three-dot menu of a series grouping. This intuitive design approach follows Amazon’s user experience philosophy of making new features discoverable without disrupting existing reading patterns.

The introduction of AI-powered recaps addresses a common pain point for readers who enjoy series but struggle to remember key details when new installments are released. Many readers experience this challenge when returning to a series after a significant gap between publications.

This feature represents Amazon‘s latest effort to maintain its dominant position in the e-book market. Competitors like Apple Books and Google Play Books have yet to announce similar AI-enhanced reading features, giving Amazon a potential competitive advantage in the digital reading space.

Privacy considerations remain important as the technology raises questions about how reader data is being collected and analyzed to power these AI features. Amazon has stated that all processing is done in accordance with their existing privacy policies, though consumer awareness around AI data usage continues to evolve.

Literary experts have expressed mixed reactions to the new feature, with some praising its practical benefits while others worry it might encourage readers to skip earlier books in a series or rely too heavily on summaries rather than experiencing the full narrative. The debate reflects broader discussions about how technology influences reading habits.

The publishing industry is closely watching how readers respond to this AI integration, as it could signal a broader shift toward technology-enhanced reading experiences. Major publishing houses have begun considering how their content might best adapt to these emerging technologies.

For readers with visual impairments or learning disabilities, the Recaps feature offers additional accessibility benefits. The technology makes complex narrative series more approachable for readers who might otherwise struggle to track multiple characters and plotlines across several books.

Amazon’s Kindle division, which revolutionized reading with its first e-reader in 2007, continues to dominate the digital reading landscape worldwide. This latest AI innovation demonstrates the company’s commitment to evolving the reading experience through technological advancement while maintaining the core appeal of digital books.

The Recaps feature represents just one aspect of how AI might transform reading in the future. Industry observers anticipate further developments that could include personalized reading recommendations, adaptive learning content, and enhanced interactive elements within digital books. As Amazon continues to pioneer these innovations, the boundary between traditional reading and technology-assisted experiences continues to evolve.
