The 2024 Fiat 500e arrives with the weight of history on its diminutive shoulders. As the electric successor to one of Italy’s most iconic city cars, it faces the challenging task of honoring decades of heritage while embracing a zero-emission future. After spending a week navigating everything from congested city streets to weekend highway jaunts, the 500e emerges as a surprisingly capable urban companion that manages to retain the original’s charm while adding modern electric sophistication.

Step back and admire the 500e, and you’ll immediately understand why passersby can’t help but smile. Fiat’s designers have masterfully updated the classic 500 silhouette without losing its essential character. The rounded headlights now feature LED technology that gives the car an alert, friendly expression, while the body maintains those perfectly proportioned curves that made the original so endearing. The closed-off grille and subtle blue accents hint at its electric nature without screaming about it. At just over twelve feet long, it’s refreshingly compact in an era of ever-growing SUVs, making it feel like a rebellious statement against automotive excess.

The interior continues this theme of thoughtful modernization. The dashboard layout feels familiar yet contemporary, with a digital instrument cluster that displays essential information clearly. The infotainment screen integrates smartphone connectivity seamlessly, though some functions require more menu diving than ideal. Material quality surprises for a car at this price point, with soft-touch surfaces and attractive color combinations available. The seats, while compact, provide adequate support for longer drives, though taller passengers may find the rear seats more suitable for short trips or cargo duty.

Under the hood – or rather, under the floor – sits a 117-horsepower electric motor that delivers power with the instant response electric vehicles are known for. The 500e feels genuinely quick around town, with acceleration that easily outpaces most city traffic. The motor’s 162 lb-ft of torque arrives immediately, making merging onto highways and navigating urban obstacles effortless. While it won’t win any drag races, the power delivery feels perfectly matched to the car’s urban mission.

The 31-kWh battery pack provides an EPA-estimated 141 miles of range, which proved adequate for a week of mixed driving. City driving yielded closer to 121 miles, while highway cruising at 70 mph brought that figure down to around 130 miles. For urban dwellers, this range eliminates anxiety about daily commuting, though longer road trips require planning around charging stops. The battery supports DC fast charging up to 85 kW, allowing for 10-80% charging in about 35 minutes when you can find a suitable charger.

Despite its electric powertrain, the 500e retains much of the nimble character that made the original 500 such a joy in tight spaces. The low center of gravity from the floor-mounted battery actually improves handling compared to the gasoline version. Steering is light and responsive, making parking in impossibly tight European-style spaces almost effortless. The suspension strikes a reasonable balance between comfort and control, though road imperfections are felt more distinctly than in larger vehicles.

Three driving modes – Normal, Range, and Sherpa – allow drivers to prioritize performance or efficiency. Normal mode provides the most engaging experience, while Range mode dulls throttle response and limits top speed to maximize distance. Sherpa mode, activated when range drops critically low, severely restricts performance but can squeeze precious extra miles from the battery. The regenerative braking system can be adjusted through paddle shifters, allowing for effective one-pedal driving in heavy traffic.

Living with the 500e for a week revealed its strengths and limitations clearly. In city environments, it excels. The compact dimensions make navigation through narrow streets and tight parking spots stress-free. The quiet electric operation creates a serene cabin environment, and the instant torque makes stop-and-go traffic less tedious. However, highway driving exposes some compromises. Wind noise becomes more noticeable at speed, and the 500e feels less planted than larger vehicles in crosswinds.

Charging at home using a Level 2 charger proved convenient, typically adding enough range overnight for daily needs. Public charging experiences varied, with some DC fast chargers working flawlessly while others required multiple attempts or failed entirely – a reminder that charging infrastructure remains inconsistent.

The 2024 Fiat 500e succeeds in its primary mission: creating an electric vehicle that retains the soul of the original while meeting modern urban transportation needs. It’s not perfect – the range limits longer trips, and some interior materials feel cost-conscious – but it offers genuine charm in an increasingly homogenized automotive landscape. For city dwellers seeking an electric vehicle with personality, the 500e is definitely worth considering. It proves that electrification doesn’t require abandoning automotive character, delivering Italian style with zero local emissions. Starting MSRP $32,500. With options as tested, $37,595.
