Joseph Lowery’s wife, Evelyn, rushed to hospital after suffering stroke

Evelyn Lowery, the wife of beloved civil rights leader Joseph E. Lowery, was reportedly rushed to the hospital after suffering a stroke.

The family released a statement to the media, saying Evelyn Lowery is listed in critical condition and is currently under-going treatment at an undisclosed location, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“As a family of faith, the Lowerys remain in prayer for their mother’s recovery,” the statement read. “Rev. Lowery remains by his wife’s side and asks for the community’s continued prayers.”


Her husband, a former leader of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, has also been beset by health issues but continues with his public and travel schedule.

Evelyn Lowery was a formidable social activist and civil rights worker, making the Lowerys a power couple within the philanthropic space. She founded of SCLC/W.O.M.E.N. in 1979. The organization continues to strive for AIDS prevention as well as the historic documentation and preservation, health and welfare and other urban issues.


The Lowerys were married on April 5, 1948.
