Meeka Claxton is the newest cast member on the most popular and talked about show on cable TV, “Basketball Wives.” Many remember her from her catfight with Tami Roman with all the hair pulling. It left the viewers in awe. She’s married and has two beautiful girls with retired NBA player Craig “Speedy” Claxton. He formerly played with the Golden State Warriors. Her family travels now back and forth between New York and Atlanta. Ro had a chance to chat with Claxton about fashion, family life and what made her want to be on the controversial show.
What made you want to be a part of the most dramatic reality show on cable right now? I came on the show to show a real family. … I wanted to show how our family is. I would have never signed up to fight on television. I knew what Tami was like on the show; I thought I would show something different but, of course, it didn’t turn out that way. I wanted to show how blessed my family was.
How did you meet your husband? We met in college, believe it or not. We both attended Hofstra University in New York. After college, we spent some time apart then got back together. I wanted him to spread his wings, but we eventually got back together. I didn’t believe in fate until I met him.
What’s a day like in the Claxton household? We have two daughters, London, 2 years old, and Aniya, who’s 8 years old. We love to travel and cook. We both share cooking duties in our home. He loves to make fried chicken. He will sometimes even call me if I’m not home and ask me to walk him through a recipe of mine. I love to make lasagna; we love Italian food. My husband is a good dad.
What values do you teach your children? We teach our girls to give back. We show them how to handle day-to-day business. We are always giving back to the community and charity. We are very involved in the community, church and their schools. When we sit down to watch TV together, if it’s something negative, we turn [the channel] right away.
What’s your personal style? I love vintage shopping. I consider myself a shopaholic. I like wearing girly things like dresses, skirts and I loooove jeans! I’m a shoe lover too. I do like Christian Louboutin but I’m actually a bigger fan of YSL [Yves Saint Laurent].
