Season 3 American Idol winner, Fantasia Barrino, returned to the competition on Thursday, March 31, to perform her new single “Collard Greens & Cornbread” for the contestants, audience and viewers of Season 10.
The track is from her 2010 album, Back to Me, which received positive reviews and debuted at #2 the week it launched. Sales, however, have since stalled at less than 500,000 units sold.
Barrino delivered a solid professional performance sans her signature smoky-voice screaming and jumping beans stage presence. With a forward-leaning French roll and a red shimmery gown with peek-a-boo thigh high slit hugging her voluptuous frame, Barrino displayed the type of stage maturity of one birthed out of the old Berry Gordy hit-makers machine.
Less than triumphant were the two eliminated contestants. Thia Megia and Naima Adedapo were sent home, which apparently caused safe contestant Lauren Alaina to have a meltdown that lasted through the commercial break. Speculation has already begun about Alaina’s diminished fortitude or lack of maturity for surviving a contest with such high stakes. She is sixteen years old. –a. robinson
