Jay Z drops $4.5 million on painting
When it comes to the love of art, music’s most powerful couple, Jay Z and Beyonce, don’t flinch at dropping a dime… The controversial rapper and queen of pop music who recently came under attack for “selling out black culture,” continue to provide critics with ammunition by purchasing an art piece that could very well end poverty.
According to the NY Post,
“Jay Z has settled for another of his art-world obsessions, plunking down a cool $4.5 million for a Jean-Michel Basquiat piece (pictured above).”
The Brooklyn born rapper tried to stay under the radar as an “anonymous buyer of a quirky 1982 Basquiat painting titled “Mecca’’ at Sotheby’s in Manhattan last week,” but was unsuccessful in doing so.
The “Mecca,” which has an estimated sale price between $4 million and $6 million, features an orange, white and black acrylic and oil-stick image of the Empire State Building under a trademark Basquiat crown.
According to Forbes, the Basquiat piece is just an addition to the $493 million worth of art, Jay Z already owns! Would you pay $4.5 million for the above Basquiat work? – ruthie hawkins/@ruubabie
