Former model-turned-rapper Lola Monroe is not a part of Wiz Khalifa‘s Taylor Gang imprint any longer. A representative for the label released a statement last week confirming that Lola and the crew had parted ways. Another Taylor Gang affiliate, Cardo, is also gone.
“After years of helping build their careers, we did not feel as if the relationships were mutually beneficial,” said the statement. “We wish LoLa and Cardo the best but hope they move on in their respective directions without affiliating themselves to the Taylor Gang brand or name.”
So many female rappers ran with all-male or mostly male crews that repped labels ranging from hip-hop flagship Def Jam Records to upstarts like the Ruff Ryders in the late 90s. But for every Eve or Lil Kim, there are 10 Amils or Lady of Rages. There are several female rappers who seemed to fall out of the sky, gain a taste of fame, only to be unceremoniously dropped from their labels before reaching their full potential. With the recent news that sexy rapstress Monroe was no longer affiliated with Wiz’s crew, it seems to be another reminder of how tenuous the relationship between female rappers and their labels can be.
