Robin Thicke, MC Lyte and Monica Headline Shannon Brown’s Wood-Star Music Festival
Professional NBA baller Shannon Brown brings the Wood-Star Music Festival to Chicago on Aug. 17-19. The two-day concert will feature soul artists on one day and classic rap on the next. Saturday, Aug. 18: Soul in the City R&B Concert Artists include: Robin Thicke, Monica, Estelle, Dawn Richard and a surprise guest. Sunday, Aug. 19: Kangols & Eight Ball Jackets Classic Hip Hop Block Party. Artists include: Doug E Fresh, Slick Rick, Rakim, MC Lyte and Naughty By Nature.
Here, rolling out talks to Brown about the upcoming event.
How did you develop the concept?
I wanted to find a way to give back, but I wanted to do it in way to bring people together for a cause. Music and sports tend to bring people together. It doesn’t matter your age, ethnicity or economic background, people come together for music and sports. Wood-Star Music Festival merges both. I also wanted an event that could attract people from across the country. Wood-Star Music Festival will become a destination event that people will look forward to every year.
If you were not doing this, what would you be doing?
I would continue to do my basketball camps and clinics that are free to kids. I had opportunities and want to give back and provide others with opportunities.
How hard is it to pull a show together of this magnitude?
What many don’t know is that we started planning this event last year. I have a great team, Captivate Marketing Group; they listened to my concept and have been working very hard to pull this together. We all work hard and we feel that we will deliver something that the City of Chicago will be proud of. All of the artists that I selected care about the community and were happy to be involved. We will work to pull together the best talent each and every year.
