Update: TLC launches Kickstarter campaign for final album, raise surprising amount

It’s been more than a decade since TLC has released a proper studio album, but this week the best-selling American girl group of all time announced that they’re going on a national tour with NKOTB and they’re working on their fifth and final album. However, TLC had fans across the board in shock when they revealed that they’re planning to fund their last album through Kickstarter.

TLC made the announcement on Monday via their new Kickstarter page and posted a message explaining why they chose to do a final album.

“This album, our FINAL ALBUM, is dedicated to all of you that have stuck with us, always challenging us to do our best. And of course, it’s for the new fans too! 😉 We just want to put out great music that touches everyone. That’s it,” they wrote.

The group also explained why they chose to ask their fans to fund their album, instead getting funding through a record label.

“While major labels offer artists multimillion-dollar recording and marketing budgets, they don’t often give artists complete control of their own music. It is ESSENTIAL that we create our final album completely on our own terms, without any restrictions, with YOU,” the group wrote.

“This final album will be the first studio album by the two of us. Of course, Lisa’s spirit will always be present in our music. That will never change,” the group wrote on Kickstarter. “We have already enlisted many key members from our original team (we’re looking at you KANDI BURRUSS!), plus many more! We will be announcing more members of the team and other news in the days to come here on Kickstarter,” TLC added.

Not surprisingly, music fans and critics across the globe blasted the group for using Kickstarter to fund their album and labeled the group as washed up.

But are TLC the ones who are having the last laugh? Find out how much money they’ve earned since Monday after the cut.
