Marin County Sheriff’s Lt. and assistant chief deputy coroner Keith Boyd confirms veteran Hollywood actor and comedian Robin Williams died from asphyxia due to hanging. Williams’ wife was the last person to see him alive before she went to bed at 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 10, 2014.

Just before noon PT, Williams’ assistant grew concerned when he wouldn’t open his bedroom door.

According to Boyd, Williams’ body was “slightly suspended in a seated suspension” with one end of a belt around his neck and the other end between and closed door and the door frame.

The decedent’s left wrist had cuts and a pocket knife was found near him with red material consistent with dried blood.

“He has been battling severe depression of late,” his media representative Mara Buxbaum told CNN. “This is a tragic and sudden loss.”

“Robin Williams was an airman, a doctor, a genie, a nanny, a president, a professor, a bangarang Peter Pan, and everything in between,” President Barack Obama said in a statement. “But he was one of a kind. He arrived in our lives as an alien — but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit. He made us laugh. He made us cry. He gave his immeasurable talent freely and generously to those who needed it most — from our troops stationed abroad to the marginalized on our own streets.”

The final cause will not be certified for several weeks.
