A Tribe Called Quest proved that boundaries didn’t have to exist in hip-hop.  explored unique sounds, lyrical styles, and fashions that went beyond the prototypical B-boy persona that dominated the late-1980s and early ‘90s within hip-hop. Phife Dawg, Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed, and Jarobi made it cool to be different by following your own rules.

On June 24, the group received the Golden Note Award at the 2016 ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards. The award was presented by Andre 3000 who often speaks about the influence that A Tribe Called Quest had on OutKast at an early age. After presenting the award, Andre 3000 introduced Busta Rhymes who paid tribute to Tribe by performing hits such as “Award Tour,” “Electric Relaxation,” and “Scenario.” Following the performance, Busta Ryhmes shared stories with the audience and revealed how A Tribe Called Quest helped to jumpstart his career with “Scenario” and gave him the confidence to go solo. It served as a moving tribute to one of the most important groups in the history of American music.

Held at The Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles, the ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards honored the top songwriters and producers over the past year. Live performances included Wale (“My PYT”); French Montana and Remy Ma (“All The Way Up”), Bibi Bourelly (“Riot”) and Anthony Brown and Group Therapy (“Worth”).
