Comedian George Lopez has always been embraced by the Black community. However, Lopez is catching flack from Blacks and women because of how he treated a Black woman at his show.

During a set in Phoenix on Feb. 5, Lopez told the audience a racially-charged joke. “There’s still two rule in the f—g Latino family. Don’t marry somebody Black, and don’t park in from of our house,” Lopez said. Most of the audience laughed, but a Black woman found his joke offensive. She flipped Lopez a bird and Lopez blasted the woman. He yelled at her, “Sit your f—g a— down. I’m talking, b—. Sit your f—g a— down. You paid to see a show. Sit your a— down. You can’t take a joke, you’re in the wrong mother f—g place.”

Lopez eventually told the woman and her friends to leave the show.

Although comedians should have the right to push boundaries when it comes race, many believe that Lopez took it too far. His reaction to disrespect a Black woman who was upset at his racist joke was out of line. But his overreaction also reveals that he was insecure about the joke. Lopez’s offensive language against the woman proves that he can’t take negative feedback himself.

Lopez has been ridiculed and defended for the joke on Twitter:
