Earvin “EJ” Johnson III is one lucky kid. After coming out to the world when he was spotted walking hand-in-hand with this boyfriend earlier this week, Earvin was swarmed with support from a number of fans, but most importantly, his father, Magic Johnson, who told reporters that he and Earvin’s mother, Cookie, were “very proud of him.” Now, EJ is giving the love back to his dad with a very public thank you.
“in the midst of all this media attention i would like to say that i am truly blessed to have parents that love and support me @MagicJohnson,” tweeted EJ on Wednesday.
Indeed, it was a great move for Johnson to support his son in the face of public scrutiny, and Johnson himself is no stranger to such public examination and debate.
In 1991, when Johnson revealed that he was HIV positive, the former NBA star was questioned by many about his sexuality. But despite the mockery and disdain, Johnson went on to become both a famous HIV advocate and LGBT rights advocate. Clearly, Johnson’s love for his son is unconditional and we’d wager that he and EJ’s relationship will inspire others with gay children, friends and relatives to be as open about their undying support for their loved ones.
