Best and worst dressed at the Espy Awards
Athletes swarmed L.A’s Nokia Theatre Wednesday for the 2013 Espys. Hosted by “Mad Men” star Jon Hamm, the awards highlighted the top moments in athleticism this year. A highlight of the evening was when Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts was presented the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage. Celebs including First Lady Michelle Obama and Lebron James contributed to a Tom Cruise narrated video honoring her career and triumph over breast cancer and myelodysplastic syndrome.
“I didn’t find that strength on my own — it’s a quality that grew with every word of support,” said Roberts during her acceptance speech. She also made sure to mention her late mother to Lebron James who she said like him was an Ohio native and was an avid “King James” fan.
“My mama was from Akron, Ohio and she loved her some King James and she’s smiling down on us right now,” said Roberts.
Prior to Roberts’ moving speech however, fashion enthusiasts were both moved and disappointed by the red carpet looks of some of America’s top athletes. One star who did not disappoint however was Olympian Gabby Douglas who stunned in a fitting black bodice dress and chic closed toe heels.
