And now for something completely different … and (um) interesting. Tagasim, my first Marcel Khalife listening experience brought back fond memories of older jazz-influenced ECM world music recordings. Marcel Khalife’s music is firmly rooted in modern Arabic music. Playing a guitar-like instrument called an oud, Khalife’s music defies categorization. Like free-form jazz, the music flows and ebbs, using various percussions and double bass instruments to add rhythmic textures.
