Eminem Returns to Hip Hop, But is it Too Late?

After a lengthy hiatus, Eminem has re-positioned himself on hip hop’s radar with the funky, spastic track “I’m Having a Relapse.” The track, which just leaked late, last night is properly titled— it sounds as if Em is having a relapse, back to 1999 to be specific.
Over Eastern-inspired production, Em goes all Slim Shady with lines like, “the smell of these chronic leaves make me hella demonic, they compelled me to kill this elderly man…”
The teaser track is only 2:07 minutes long, and finds him spitting all the way through (sometimes in an odd, British-ish accent). His upcoming album, officially titled Relapse, is scheduled to drop by the end of 2008. If the song is indicative of the direction that his upcoming album will take, it could be both a gift and a curse. He was arguably his best, lyrically, between 1999 and 2001, but at 36 years-old, his youthful silliness could get a little weird after a couple of songs.
Em, who reportedly spent the month of September in Florida with Dr. Dre working on his new album, says that he will be doing a lot of the production on his album as well. “Right now I’m kinda just concentrating on my own stuff, for right now and just banging out tracks and producing a lot of stuff,” he said on his Sirius Satellite show, Shade 45. “You know, the more I keep producing the better it seems like I get ’cause I just start knowing stuff.”
Eminem also just dropped a new book, The Way I Am. –j.h.
