Young Money/Universal Republic has a rising star who also happens to be a great songstress named Shanell. She is currently performing on Weezy’s “I Am Still Music 2” tour. Her hit song, “How to Love,” is a cover of Lil Wayne’s single. Shanell has written hit songs for Kelis, Ne-Yo, Melanie Fiona, Jennifer Hudson, Beyoncé and the list goes on. She is currently wearing many hats by being the artistic director of Lil Wayne’s current tour and having her own set. Shanell is a triple threat, and with her edgy lyrics and style, she is the girl you want to watch. Ro caught up with her at Glam Bar Salon & Spa in Atlanta for a little girl talk.
How did you become the artistic director of Lil Wayne’s I Am Still Music 2 tour?
Lil Wayne and I have been knowing each other for quite some time. He trusted me and knew I could choreograph. I went to Atlanta Tri City High School for performing arts. Each time we got together, it came with more responsibilities.
Tell us about your remake of Lil Wayne’s song, “How to Love?”
When I heard the song, I said that should have been mine. I remade it to show what a woman would say.
What’s your signature style?
I love rock ‘n’ roll. It’s free and funky. I love vintage and shopping at stores like Salvation Army. I like to look for great pieces. I’m a shoe lover, too.
What would you say your music reminds people of?
I have my own buzz.I have a very controversial song out now called, “My button.” It’s about a woman knowing how to “motivate” herself.
Name some artists that you would love to work with?
I would have loved to work with Amy Winehouse! I would also like to work with Ryan Leslie, Cee Lo Green and Frances & The Lights.
