In the ‘90s and early aughts, Sophia White was singing background for popular artists like Celine Dion, Peabo Bryson, Freddy Jackson and Toto. In addition, White provided vocal producing and vocal training for record labels.
Today, White has stepped out of the recording studio and into the spotlight. As a motivational speaker, White has been firing up audiences at business meetings like Atlanta Business League’s Super Tuesday. At other times, she’s advancing her own ministry, cooking and serving “good meals” to the homeless with her husband, John, and two daughters by her side.
“I traveled the world for 13 years singing background … from blues to big band. I was even with the Ellington Orchestra. I love to see, touch and feel people. I wasn’t really impacting their lives like I knew I could. The desire to market and help artists to properly brand, developed then. … I knew what it took to promote the shows and to take it to mass market, while making sure that the product [the artist] was being sold properly to the public,” says White of the reason she created Kenajzi Inc, a marketing and management company that helps artists with proper branding.
If White could close her eyes and wield her magic wand, she would unite all women, particularly black women. “I am working to bridge the gap with women who are separated merely by insecurities. We can help build each other [up] with our strengths. We have the power in our minds and mouths to make things happen the way God intended,” she says.
It’s the perfect mind-set for White, who works as the general manger of Steve Harvey World Group, as she develops the strategy for their newest campaign: “I Am Power,” a spiritually empowering initiative that encourages people to effect change, starting with themselves. –yvette caslin
