Young Mother and 2 Friends Killed After Buying Birthday Cake
Chanda Thompson and two friends were ambushed and killed.

On Nov. 5, 2-year-old Nazhia Edmonds’ mother went to purchase birthday cake for the toddler, and she never returned.

The details of the crime were too shocking to be believed: On Saturday three young adults who went to purchase birthday cake were ambushed and killed in a middle-class Chicago neighborhood in broad daylight.

It was a breezy and clear Saturday evening, around 5 p.m., when Chanda Thompson, her boyfriend Shawn Russell and a male grammar school friend, Cortez Champion — all were 21-years-old — went to the famous A Piece of Cake bakery in Chicago’s Chatham neighborhood to purchase birthday cake for Thompson’s daughter.

After purchasing the cake, the trio returned to the car and someone approached the vehicle and sprayed the car with gunfire. The trio died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Thompson was a nursing student and she also worked at a neighborhood daycare center to provide a better life for her child; relatives say Thompson was not the intended victim, that it was a case of wrong place, wrong time for her. unidentified boyfriend was the target.

Witnesses have stepped up to assist police in the manhunt for the killer, and late Sunday evening a 17-year-old boy was in custody.

Thompson’s 22-year-old brother, Joshua Thompson, said that his sister lived a low-risk lifestyle and should not have been murdered: “ I don’t know what happened, but I know those bullets were not intended for her.”
