A pioneer in every sense of the word, seeing MC Lyte in the very back of the ballroom at an annual ASCAP awards event in Beverly Hills a few years back was almost embarrassing to see. She gave so much to the game — and performed her profession with her clothes on — yet she was relegated to the cheap seats at a major music gala. Shameful.

To paraphrase what Patrick Swayze said in the classic Dirty Dancing, no one should put this baby — our baby — in a corner. Ever.
