Doctoral Student Henry Carter Writes Book, ‘Who Moved My Nuts?’ to Inspire Youth

5. Talk to our young folk, particularly black men who are dropping out of high school, the value of pursuing higher education. And, in what ways did you benefit from obtaining your graduate degree and what is it in?

They only way you can stifle someone growth is to deny them knowledge. The word ‘educate’ has its root from a Latin word “E duco” which means E (from, out of) Duco (I lead, I conduct).  From the root meaning of the word we can surmise that an education can bring us out of a condition and position us to lead others out of that same condition. Boys and men of color have an obligation to improve their wisdom, so they will play a role in the development of themselves and their community.  I have had the awesome opportunity for the past 20 years to assist in the development of boys and men of color. I truly believe that when you teach a young man to value himself as a human being and let them know they you expect them to accomplish excellence in academics, they become compelled to improve their intellectual prowess.

In the book I share the challenges I experienced in acquiring my bachelors degree. While pursing my degree, I was a young father and husband. By age of 22 both of my parents were deceased. I realized that in order to provide for my family I needed marketable skills. I also wanted to leave a legacy of academic excellence to my children. I continued my post graduate studies in business and acquired my masters in business administration. I am currently pursuing my doctorate in business administration.
