We ve become so dependent on this social media platform and it is so intertwined in the very cultural fabric of America that it’s hard to believe just how young Twitter is.
Today marks Twitter’s 6th birthday. For real.
On March 21, 2006, founder Jack Dorsey provided the first ever tweet on Twitter.
“Just setting up my twttr,” Dorsey wrote modestly on that day.
Not exactly profound. But then again, most of what is transmitted out into the airwaves via Twitter isn t either.
It has become the de facto short message system of the Internet and the favorite social networking service of celebrities around the world.
It s hard to believe that Twitter almost didn t make it past birth. The social service started out as an offhand project from the creators of podcasting company Odeo, and though it immediately showed potential, its infancy was punctuated by serious downtime its first couple of years. It was touch-and-go for a minute.
Today, with over 500 million users, it is the largest one-to-many open communication platform in the world.
