Mothers’ Day is the one day when we take time to express our love and gratitude for the women who have devoted their lives to making ours safe and happy. But since we know that not every woman comes with that maternal switch in the on position, we can’t ignore (as much as we’d like to) the Mom’s who made headlines for being the anti-Mom. Here’s a list of those who’ve achieved fame at the cost of their children.
Nadya Denise Doud-Suleman Gutierrez came to international attention after she gave birth to octuplets in January 2009. Her set of octuplets are only the second to be born alive in the U.S. and theyare the longest surviving octuplets in the world. But, Suleman, an unemployed single mother who already had six other young children at home has been the target of much controversy for eratic behavior (quest to look like Angelina Jolie and recently spending more than $500 on a haircut) while she collects welfare and children are said to be living in squalor.
