New York Knicks star Amar’e Stoudemire found himself in hot water with the league after he was fined $50,000 by the NBA “for using offensive and derogatory language in a Twitter message.”
According to Yahoo! News, on Saturday morning (June 23), Stoudemire tweeted to his fans that he just completed a lengthy workout. An angry Knicks fan, @BFerrelli, then responded to Stoudemire, telling him that he should “come back stronger to make up for this past season.”
Well, Stoudemire didn’t take too kindly to the fans words and decided to DM him a nasty little message.
“F–k you. I don’t have to do any thing [sic] f-g,” wrote Stoudemire.
@BFerelli then took a screenshot of Stoudemire’s DM and tweeted the message to the public.
After his message hit the blogosphere, Stoudemire apologized to the fan through another DM and @BFerrelli accepted and asked Stoudemire to follow him or send him Knicks tickets.
According to Howard Beck of The New York Times, Stoudemire also released a public apology to his fans for the slur.
“I am a huge supporter of civil rights for all people. I am disappointed in myself for my statement to a fan,” Stoudemire said in his statement. “I should have known better and there is no excuse.”
Hopefully, Stoudemire and other celebrities will learn that it’s never OK to use anti-gay slurs. Unfortunately, he isn’t the only star to get in trouble for doing so. Check out some other homophobic scandals below. –nicholas robinson
