Martin Fitzgerald Lawrence was born on April 16, 1965, the second of six children, near Frankfurt, Germany to American parents. His father was in the military but left the family when he was 8 years old. Laurence was given his first name after civil rights leader Martin Luther King and his middle name after the late beloved President John Fitzgerald Kennedy.
