Some may be surprised, given the known narrative detailing her and sister Venus’ upbringing in the gritty Los Angeles suburb of Compton, Calif., but Serena Jameka Williams was actually born on September 26, 1981 in the Midwest, in Saginaw, Mich., a couple of hours north of Detroit near the upper peninsula, the youngest of Richard and Oracene Williams’s five daughters.
