Student chefs shine in cooking competition

Transformation never tasted so good!

The Cooking up Change event, a student culinary competition that encourages Chicago Public Schools students to make healthy food choices, took place recently at The Bridgeport Art Center.

Attendees sampled healthy food fare — that met the USDA nutrition and price guidelines — created by the student chefs and learned about local and national efforts to reinvent school food.

Washington High School was declared the winners of the event. Culinary Students: Leonard Gutierrez, Marina Nava, Karen Rivera, and Leon Sanchez; culinary instructors: Olanike Braimoh and Tai Sellers; and mentor: Terri Lamont, Greater Chicago Food Depository.

The Washington High School students’ winning meal was Jerk chicken rancheros (shredded turkey served on tostadas with cilantro, salsa, and pineapple); Elotes Washington (corn on the cob brushed with cayenne and parmesan cheese) and Fruta de Tropico (mixed fruit with yogurt and cinnamon).

The Washington High School team will go on to represent Chicago in the Cooking up Change national finals in May 2013.
