Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded by Nicki Minaj
Nicki, Nicki, Nicki. The First Lady of Young Money is masterful getting your attention, but for all of the risk-taking she does regarding her wardrobe and performances; she’s consistently safe and calculated as an artist. Her sophomore album sinks under the weight of pop pandering, despite some truly inspired moments. She centers the “Roman” character in the title, but he’s barely present and her pop excursions are predictably boring entries into the already-overdone Eurodance fad. It’s okay to present style over substance every now and then—but this isn’t even interesting. And from an artist as superficially “weird” as Nicki Minaj, that’s just sad.
