“Respect Yourself” by the Staple Singers

Written by Stax Records’ Luther Ingram and Mack Rice after Ingram decided that “black folk need to learn to respect themselves,” the song became one of the Staple Singers’ most well-known hits. The lyrics cover everything from men respecting women to people respecting each other in general, and is sung with gusto by Pops Staples and the always-distinct Mavis.
