“People Get Ready” by The Impressions

Originally a quartet fronted by Jerry Butler, the Impressions experienced their post-Butler breakthrough with this gospel-tinged tune written by member Curtis Mayfield. With Mayfield emerging as their chief songwriter/producer and now, lead vocalist, the group’s work became much more socially-conscious. This became their signature song and an anthem for social change.
