“Say It Loud (I’m Black and I’m Proud)” by James Brown
As the Civil Rights Movement morphed into the more assertive Black Power Movement, James Brown’s powerful funk classic became one of the era’s most celebrated and quoted releases. Soul Brother #1 demands that his people take pride in who they are—one of his many pride-themed songs of the era. Incidentally, the children chanting the song’s famous hook were mostly white and Asian schoolkids who were playing across the street from the studio.
