The hip-hop “freshmen” of 2012 and 2013 all carve their own niche, and in their own ways, each pays homage to a legendary rhymer from the genre’s storied past.

While some want to proclaim that hip-hop is “dead,” there are as many varied voices and personas making interesting music as there have ever been. And if you listen closely–and with an open mind–you can see a little bit of your old favorites reflected in many of the new kids.

From Kendrick Lamar to Azealia Banks, here are the new generation of artists breathing new life into hip-hop….
