Beyoncé, Draya Michele and Malinda Williams are three of Hollywood’s hottest entertainers, showing up on many of the highest-rated shows on television and on the silver screen. Beyoncé has forged ahead singing on the U.S. Capitol steps for the president of the United States and weeks following taking over the stage during halftime at Super Bowl 2013, the third-most watched program in television history.

What we see as “reality” might be the beginning of a new era, penetrating the psyche of an industry that’s still evolving in its depiction of what a beautiful African American woman’s role is in American culture.
