Cobain inspired a legion of teenagers to let their hair fall into their faces and wear dingy flannel and grimy jeans. But by the late 90s, most of his devotees had left grunge behind–and were slam-dancing to rap-metal bands or “MMMBop”ing along with Top 40 radio. Meanwhile, 2Pac’s sensitive-thug persona became the most imitated approach in hip-hop music and while the do-rag and nose ring never quite caught on with fans, fights could still erupt if you dared utter a negative word about him.
