No. 1: Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd (1973)
The Floyd’s uber-classic stayed on the Billboard charts for almost 30 years because every generation of “aficionados” discover the spaced-out genius of this masterpiece. A concept album about disillusionment in modern society and dark as all get out, the album is full of beautiful melodies and lush, atmospheric (there’s that word again) production. The lyrics are just “deep” enough to spawn analysis and the music is flat-out great. And, here’s a free tip–try the thing where you listen to it while watching The Wizard of Oz.
