Award winning author and Essence Magazine columnist Sophia Nelson will be in Houston for Mother’s Day weekend hosting a series of empowering women’s events with Me and We, Incorporated. The weekend kicked off Thursday, May 9 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a wine tasting and intimate conversation on redefining your beauty, and understanding what defines you at Melodrama Boutique. The kickoff was followed by a visit to Debra Duncan’s Great Day Houston morning talk show on Friday May 10 and ends with a Mother’s Day life class brunch on Saturday, May 11 at the JW Marriott on 5150 Westheimer Road.
“Me and We, Inc. Founder Dr. Sonya Sloan and I teamed up for this event to teach women of color how to live the life that they want pertaining to their relationships, careers and emotional setbacks. African American women typically don’t receive the guidance that most young women get and Dr. Sloan and I felt that that this particular message was especially important for the professional working women,” shared Nelson. “The Me and We program is built around a lot of the things that I have been speaking about in my books and throughout my career as a speaker … The message that they share of ‘When Me takes care of We then we can soar’ has been a mantra of mine because when sisters support each other, we soar but the ugly truth is that we don’t treat each other well as black women. If we want to be successful then we need to come together and change that dynamic and stop placing our anger towards each other.”
The Me and We, Inc Mother’s Day brunch will be open to the public by purchasing tickets through the Me and We website. Nelson will be speaking on topics from her book Black Woman Redefined and hosting a special life class titled “Ignite the Power in You.”
