Interview with a user of the drug Molly
Molly or MDMA has been glamourized in Hip-Hop culture as a party starter that can destroy any and all inhibitions and make for a wild night. Beyond it’s allure and promise of a good time however, it also has potentially damning side effects that include impairment, depression and seizures when cocktailed with alcohol and other drugs.
Most recently a defense lawyer for a Morehouse College student blamed the drug for causing the impairment to a Spelman student who says she was raped. Prior to that rapper Rick Ross saw his Reebook endorsement crumble for a line he wrote about slipping MDMA into a woman’s drink.
Rollingout recently sat down with a Molly user [who wished to remain anonymous] that has taken the drug an estimated 15 to 20 times and detailed their experiences while “rolling” on the pills. -danielle canada
Why did you decide to try Molly?
I had always wondered about experimenting with other drugs, seperate from smoking weed. I always wanted to try Ecstasy and then I heard Molly was safer so I did that instead.
Detail your first experience with it, what did it feel like?
The first time I tried Molly was in New York City last April for a friends birthday. I was terrified to actually do it but in the cab on our way to the club I opened the capsule, put the powder in my hand and licked it. It tastes terrible, as it probably should because it’s chemicals. It took about an hour until I actually felt anything. Unlike smoking weed or drinking alcohol, you don’t really know when you’re rolling as it’s called. You just start to feel really happy and become ultra friendly with everyone. It almost feels like you are floating on cloud nine. You also really want to dance.
Were there any side effects after you took it?
There isnt really a crash like other drugs but there are some other factors. One major thing is you tend to clench your jaw which results in a sore mouth the next day and it makes it hard to eat. This really doesn’t matter because Molly takes away your appetite. Also you continuously want to drink and smoke [marijuana] which is a bad combination.
Did you sweat profusely?
No, not at all. I don’t know where that [rumored side effect] came from.
Did you have friends and/or family who knew you took it?
A few of my friends have taken it with me. My sister has not done it herself but she knows I have.
Have you used Molly again since your first time?
YES! [laughs excitedly]
So you don’t regret taking it?
I do and I don’t. Its a very fun drug that always leads to a good time. I have only had one bad experience with Molly, and that was because I did not know who I got it from.
What happened?
I couldn’t sleep for three days, I kind of just laid there. I tried to sleep but I couldn’t. I felt depressed and moved very slowly.
What would you say to someone interested in trying Molly?
I would say do it with someone that has already done it or around people that you trust. You tend to be extremely honest [while on it] so be careful if you have any secrets.
