Recently, US Surgeon General, Dr. Regina Benjamin, gave Hampton University graduates a few tips on maintaining their health. She received a honorary Doctor of Science degree in recognition of her outstanding work in medicine and health care at the school’s 2013 commencement.
Benjamin is the 18th Surgeon General of the United States. As “America’s Doctor,” she provides the public with the best scientific information available on how to improve their health and the health of the nation. She also oversees the operational command of 6,500 uniformed public health officers who serve in locations around the world to promote and protect the health of the American people.
At Hampton University’s 2013 commencement, Benjamin spoke about sexually transmitted diseases, noting that every medical school now has to include modules about STDs in their core curriculum due to a resolution that was forwarded to the American Medical Association (AMA).
She later informed graduates that cigarette companies spend more than a million dollars per hour on advertising, highlighting that ad agencies focus on children and young adults.
Lastly, she urged the budding leaders to find ways to stay involved in their communities.
