Delicia Hassan, a manager of digital ads for Turner Sports in Atlanta offers advice to recent college graduates.
You manage digital ads for Turner Sports, what made you want to go into that field?
I have been managing digital ads for Turner Sports for 3 years now. Prior to my current role, I was an A&R in the music industry, working with artists, producers and musicians developing music. I witnessed the decline of record sales and the evolution of the music business change from buying CD’s to digital downloads. I quickly became interested in the digital market and sought opportunities to learn this field. Basically, I couldn’t beat them, so I joined them.
What do you love most about what you do?
I am a strong believer that you have to have passion with everything you do and I love sports! Music will always be my first love but sports has always come in second. The Turner Sports culture and portfolio is great for a person like me and comes with perks, such as, tickets to major sporting events, which is always a plus!
Would you say you need to like sports to do what you do?
You do not have to like sports to perform in my current role, however, it does help to understand the culture and most importantly understanding the fan!
Is your job very competitive?
My job is not as competitive, as getting into Turner Sports as a whole. Turner is a great company and is somewhat competitive in the Atlanta market, being that there aren’t too many sports and entertainment companies of this magnitude here.
What advice would you give to graduates wanting to go into your field?
It is never too early to network and meet people. I began networking as a teen and landed my first internship for MC Hammer at Bust-It Records, in my hometown, Oakland, CA. Since then, I expanded my network and it’s brought me where I am today.
