Serena Williams, the incomparable and the seemingly indestructible No. 1 player in the world, shockingly succumbed to Wimbledon “giant killer” Sabine Lisicki in the fourth round of the tennis’ greatest major, 2-6, 6-1, 4-6.
The 28th seed Lisicki stormed out of the gates, routing Williams in the first set before Williams regained her composure and steamrolled the underling in the second set. But leading 3-0 in the third set, Williams came unglued and Lisicki regained her equillibrium after being on the ropes and pulled off the biggest upset in tennis in 2013.
Sloane Stephens is the lone American left at Wimbledon.
Tennis loyalists were as shocked as the announcers and vented their feelings all over social media, most particularly Twitter. Take a look at what they had to say.
Nadal, Federer, Sharapova, and now #Serena bounced from #Wimbledon 2013. Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue. #Airplane
